Predictive value of procalcitonin in respiratory adenovirus infections in children with elevated C-reactive protein levels

چکیده
Abstract: Adenoviruses (ADV) often cause respiratory infections. They have, in contrast to other respiratory viruses via a potential acute phase parameter (C-reactive protein, leukocytes and interleukin 6) to trigger. ADV infections are associated with increased secretion of IL-6 and TNF-?lpha, which activates the synthesis of acute phase proteins. The exact pathogenic mechanism is still unclear. Procalcitonin (PCT) offers the possibility, particularly at elevated CRP levels between ADP and bacterial infections to distinguish and thus avoid antibiotic prescriptions.

Procalcitonin: A Reliable Marker for the Diagnosis of Neonatal Sepsis
Objective(s) In the last few years, serum procalcitonin has been proposed as an early marker of infections in neonates, with varying results. In this study, we aimed to investigate the value of procalcitonin, and C- reactive protein in establishing the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Materials and Methods Blood samples were collected at admission from 69 neonates with suspected infection (admi...
متن کاملPrognostic Value of C - reactive Protein and Procalcitonin Levels in Predicting Anastomotic Leakage after Colorectal Resection in Mazandaran Province
Background and purpose: Colorectal resection is used for various diseases and leakage in an anastomosis is one of its complications. Some studies confirmed the predictive effects of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin markers leakage in anastomosis. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of CRP and procalcitonin in predicting anastomotic leakage in elective colorectal surge...
متن کاملSignificance of Serum Procalcitonin Level in the Early Diagnosis of Neonatal Sepsis
Background: Sepsis in neonates presents itself with non-specific clinical features which makes early diagnosis difficult. However, procalcitonin (PCT) and other inflammatory markers have recently been considered as sensitive markers for the early detection of neonatal sepsis. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of PCT in the early detection of neonatal sepsis an...
متن کاملProcalcitonin and C-reactive protein levels in HIV-positive subjects with tuberculosis and pneumonia.
Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and pneumococcal community-acquired pneumonia (PCAP) are common causes of lower respiratory tract infections in HIV-seropositive patients and may have similar clinical and radiological features. This study aimed to assess the value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in HIV-seropositive patients with pneumonia, and to investigate their p...
متن کاملProcalcitonin as a Marker of Neonatal Sepsis in Intensive Care Units
Background: The appropriateness of using serum levels of procalcotonin (PCT) for early diagnosis of newborn sepsis is still controversial. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare the usefulness of PCT with those of serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) counts in the diagnosis and response to treatment of neonatal sepsis. Methods: A total of 47 ...
